Fort Lauderdale is known for
its extensive network of canals and is an especially popular
destination for fishing. Fort Lauderdale's economy is very
reliant on tourism, and used to be a notorious spring break
destination. Residents of the area became upset with the damage
done during the season, however, that they passed laws that
made partying harder. Partygoers started attending the much
more liberal Daytona Beach for spring break. Ft. Lauderdale
suffered an enormous recession as a result of the self-imposed
boycott. The Ft. Lauderdale hotel industry survived by starting
to cater to the retired population. The downtown area, especially
around Las Olas Boulevard, has seen dramatic growth in the
past decade, and now hosts many new hotels and high-rise condominiums.
The city's main airport is Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International
Airport located in Dania Beach, Florida between the cities
of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood, about 20 miles north of
Miami.
